چکیده

Abstract Although the Cretaceous is widely regarded as a time of great evolutionary transition for freshwater fish fauna North America, fossil record this period notoriously poor, consisting mostly fragments and isolated skeletal elements. Exceptions include acipenseriforms, discussed in paper, some exceedingly rare teleosts. Here we describe two new species well-preserved sturgeons (Acipenseridae) from Tanis site Late Hell Creek Formation Dakota. The type referred materials were preserved loosely consolidated matrix. † Acipenser praeparatorum n. sp. represented by multiple body fossils (including head relatively complete postcranial remains) specimen an intact, three dimensionally skull pectoral girdle. This taxon can be diagnosed based on features opercular elements (exceptionally tall narrow branchiostegal). second species, anisinferos sp., partially skull, elongate preorbital region (i.e., snout) absence thorn-like spines roofing bones. Most known sturgeon are only undiagnosable fragmentary remains scutes pectoral-fin spines) or poorly partial skeletons (e.g., Protoscaphirhynchus ), with Priscosturion Anchiacipenser (both monotypic) being exceptions. Therefore, newly discovered give glimpse into evolution Acipenseridae at critical phylogenetic history suggest significant morphological taxonomic diversity early group. The first reported ceratopsid dinosaur from eastern North America (Owl Creek Formation, Upper Cretaceous, Mississippi, USA)

Ceratopsids ("horned dinosaurs") are known from western North America and Asia, a distribution reflecting an inferred subaerial link between the two landmasses during the Late Cretaceous. However, this clade was previously unknown from eastern North America, presumably due to limited outcrop of the appropriate age and depositional environment as well as the separation of eastern and western Nor...

Mineralized soft-tissue structure and chemistry in a mummified hadrosaur from the Hell Creek Formation, North Dakota (USA).

An extremely well-preserved dinosaur (Cf. Edmontosaurus sp.) found in the Hell Creek Formation (Upper Cretaceous, North Dakota) retains soft-tissue replacement structures and associated organic compounds. Mineral cements precipitated in the skin apparently follow original cell boundaries, partially preserving epidermis microstructure. Infrared and electron microprobe images of ossified tendon c...

Crabs from the Cannonball Formation (paleocene) of North Dakota

More than 50 specimens of fossil crabs collected from the Cannonball formation (Paleocene) of southern Morton and Burleigh Counties, south-central North Dakota form the basis for the first report of fossil crustaceans in North Dakota. The new genus Camarocarcinus is created for their reception with the new species C. arnesoni as the type species. A separate, single, large propodus is placed in ...

Tiny pollen grains: first evidence of Saururaceae from the Late Cretaceous of western North America

BACKGROUND The Saururaceae, a very small family of Piperales comprising only six species in four genera, have a relatively scanty fossil record outside of Europe. The phylogenetic relationships of the four genera to each other are resolved, with the type genus Saururus occurring in both eastern North America and East Asia. No extant species occurs in western Eurasia. The most exceptional find s...

A microraptorine (Dinosauria-Dromaeosauridae) from the Late Cretaceous of North America.

The fossil assemblages of the Late Cretaceous of North America are dominated by large-bodied dinosaur species. Associated skeletons of small dinosaurs are exceedingly rare, and small (<10 kg) carnivorous theropods have not previously been reported from these beds. Here, we describe a small dromaeosaurid from the 75-million-year-old Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta, Canada. Hesperonychus eliza...
